ROKPA HIMALAYAN CHALLENGE 2006
This year the Rokpa sponsored Himalayan challenge trek will begin on March 2nd 2006 returning on March 12th 2006 via Heathrow, Kathmandu. and Paphlu.

NEPAL
The second poorest country in the world, Nepal, shares its northern border with Tibet and its population in the Himalayas shares the Tibetan language and culture. The Sherpas who inhabit these upper regions of Nepal are legendary for their gaiety and friendliness, and their tolerance, kindness and hospitality
.

ITINERARY
On arrival in Kathmandu you will stay at a 4 star hotel and can visit the Rokpa projects close by the Boudnath Stupa, the Rokpa House Orphanage, and the projects for health, education and womens' workshops.

This year's trek begins with an early morning flight to Paphlu in the lower Everest region, an area of exceptional scenic beauty taking us through Sherpa farms and villages untouched by tourism, ancient mountain monasteries, with opportunities to climb the Konglemu Danda ridge (13.604 ft) for the very fit and energetic. The Sherpa villagers will give us a colourful welcome in response to the many health and education projects funded by CAN. Walking thorough forests, fields and beautiful alpine landscapes we visit some of these projects as well as Thubten Choling, an authentic Tibetan Buddhist Monastery that was transplanted in the 1960s from Rongbuk Monastery on the North side of Everest. About 150 monks and nuns and lay practitioners live in this idyllic site in stone huts around the main gompa. This is an area overflowing with authentic Tibetan tradition and Sherpa hospitality. Finally the trek will end with more time to explore Kathmandu and a Gala dinner.

WHAT YOUR TREK WILL SUPPORT
Your trek will support the protection of the rich culture of the Himalaya especially that found on the Tibetan plateau, and also the health educational and cultural projects of Rokpa and the Sherpa culture. It is crucial for our future to preserve and protect endangered cultures in general and here we are focusing on the distinctive systems of art, music, poetry, philosophy and profound spiritual teaching of Tibet.
